About the Author
Dr. Irwin Schwartz, Ed.D., CSCS, is a health and fitness professional with more than thirty-five years of experience in the field. He created the curriculum for the Wellness and Physical Fitness course at Pace University (Pleasantville, NY) in 2000, and has been teaching the course since then. In 1999, Dr. Schwartz entered an Athletic Training Internship Program and completed more than 1,500 clinical hours in sports medicine. He worked with college athletes and was involved in the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of their sports injuries. In 2000, he earned his Certification as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). In 2008, he became a professional member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). While working as a personal trainer and fitness consultant from 1982 to 2000, Dr. Schwartz wrote and produced two instructional videos and a manual on the safe and proper use of home weight-training equipment. From 1982 to 1991, Dr. Schwartz co-owned and operated Exercise Guidance Associates, Inc. in Chappaqua, NY, where he and his partner sold exercise equipment, designed total fitness programs for their clients, and supervised their workouts. Before joining the faculty at Pace, Dr. Schwartz had worked at Arturo Toscanini Community Junior High School 145 in the Bronx since 1968. He served as an assistant principal, health and physical education instructor, team leader, health coordinator and coach. Dr. Schwartz attained a Doctor of Education degree in 1976 from Fordham University. He earned a Master of Science in Health from Herbert H. Lehman College in 1970. In 1968, he received a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education from Hunter College, where he minored in physiology and anatomy. Dr. Schwartz has expertise in the physiology of muscular activity, the physiology of exercise, physiology and anatomy, kinesiology, the efficiency of human movement, and sports medicine

Presentation Zen DesignGarr's a great writer, and his first Presentation Zen book made a huge impact on how I create PPT slides. His new Zen Design book is unfortunately more of the same. He covers some art and design topics in detail, such as color selection, font kerning, recommended fonts, how to take your own digital photographs, symmetry vs asymmetry but otherwise it is more of the same.I read through Zen Design and felt it did not add as much value as the first book. Sure, some of the topics are interesting but I've gotten the same lessons from other professionals in the area of photography and art. It felt like Garr ran out of new topics to discuss and fleshed out some of the earlier concepts - which isn't necessarily a bad thing.Overall, I felt that you could just buy and read the first book and be well on your way. The Zen Design book isn't mandatory. It's good to read, but not as important as the first book.Pros: Covers more design topics in detail, excellent tips aboundCons: More of the same, nothing revolutionary, not as good as the first bookOverall: 3/5 stars

Certainly the work is beautifully presented in Garr Reynolds books and if this is your first experience of the author, I would recommend this book because it contains a deeper synopsis of his ideas - but, all the books develop the same premise, with slight modification rather than new information or ideas. Great books for inspiration and design ideas

This is a little eccentric, but Zen usually is. I am a 7th grade English teacher, and I create a lot of presentations for my class on my own. The chapters on use of fonts, color, and images have really helped me to make my presentations pop. I had to buy this book for a college class, but I am using it more in my job. I like it!

As many others have commented this book is a wonderfully thoughtful, beautiful read. A point that others have not mentioned is that it has lots of specific advice. For example, if you want expert advice about which fonts look good on a small screen or shown larger than life, it is here. The section on color is the best I have seen. It covers the stuff like avoiding clashing colors, hot vs cold colors, that I have seen written up many times but then he covers the use of background colors in keynote vs classroom slides and the online tools for picking colors (like Kuler). So, if you want advice that goes beyond the general "good advice" and gets at specifics for making beautiful high end graphics to support your presentations you want this book.

A good overview of presentation design, and follow up to his earlier volume. This book perhaps could have offered more advice for dealing with real life presentation situations. Not everything is a production that requires fully engaging the audience (although that should still be the goal). Sometimes you need to get a presentation across with 'economy' in terms of the time invested, i.e., the presentation you make needs to be the presentation you hand out as a reference document. More discussion on this second tier of presentations would have been very well received. Not everything is a plenary presentation, and most of us can't afford to have agencies put our presentations together for us.Still a very good book that points to where you can go and how to get there with your presentation.

This book was perfect for skimming to read about the parts that interested me. The guest pieces added a nice variation from the usual "I am the expert!" take of most self-help books. It does rely on you accepting the Japanese philosophy of less clutter, simpler desgins, etc. But you accepted that when you chose a book with Zen in the title. Plenty of pictures and before and after comparisons, so you know what to look for in your own work. My only criticism is that I can apply all the nice touches to a presentation of 6-8 slides with one message. Unfortunately, my work often requires me to cover several subjects and 50 or more slides. I will say that 6 or 8 slides made with these principles would be a refreshing change to most meetings.

This is a beautiful book and it almost feels sacred to hold it in your hands and turn the gorgeous pages. It is well laid out and relaxing on the mind to read. The information in this book is invaluable. I wish that I had known about it years ago. It has really changed my perspective.I bought 'Presentation Zen' by Garr Reynolds too and they are two of my favorite books on the bookshelf.

Bought the book with hopes of reading it and taking the test. Also took the class from Oracle. Neither the book or the class even remotely prepare you for the test. There are many things asked on the test that are not covered in the book nor in the class. Highly disappointed.

The book is good as a start point to prepare your self for the exam, it will give you an overview about each section in the exam and then you need to search more information about each section.

Content according to OCA certification. Quite specific for certification, managing to keep the reader's attention. Very good book. I recommend.

Currently the best preparation available for this exam, I also have the book by Calkin, but this is easier to get through written with some humour as well. The main advantages over other books are sample tests after each chapter, as well as full exams at the end of the book and online. Ernest really tries to keep your attention and is focused on getting you through the exam.I would have given 5 stars, but for the fact that Ernest skips over Automated Installer, saying it is not relevant for the exam, however there were at least 3 in-depth questions on AI in the exam I took. Not sure whose fault this was.Also, you do need to read the matching chapters from the official Oracle Solaris 11 documentation [...] to supplement the information from the book.Good luck!

I've done a lot of Solaris 10 in the past and have been certified in it for a few years. I bought this book thinking it would cover the new stuff in Sol 11 as I had just started a project to implement T5 servers running clustered ldoms with zones on top of them (p2v'd sol 10 zones).Partly my fault for not checking out the contents enough but this is too much an introduction to Solaris, with none of the important features of Sol 11 covered, or at best just touched on. I wanted layered virtual networking, IPS, branded zones, p2v, crossbow, ipadm, dladm etc. As I said my fault but this is not an in depth reference, 1Z0-821 is "Sysadmin 1" from the old Sun days, adding users, managing printers etc. Anyone with Sol10 cert wants something that covers 1Z0-820, OCP and this just doesn't.Since buying it, I've skimmed the book for new stuff and there's virtually none, however there are litterally hundreds of great, free Oracle blogs about Sol11 stuff and they have been way more useful than this book.docs.oracle.com is your friend...
