Breathtaking book. I have read so many books on the holocaust and never heard about Irena Sandler. Irena saved over 2500 children yetwe have never heard of her, Thanks to a research project by some american high school students Irena is finally getting the recognition thatshe deserves. Must read, one of those books you will have a hard time putting down. If you do not want to read it for yourself, read it for the over 2500 children she saved and what they and their families went thru for these children to be rescued
All you need to know is that Irena Sendler was the runner up for the Nobel Peace Prize in the last decade. This book is all about people helping people - no matter their age, background, or faith. The book has 3 parts - the 1st about the Kansas teenagers who responded to a National History Day challenge by looking into the little known information about Irena. The 2nd part tells the story of Irena's work in the Warsaw ghetto during WW II. It is simply incredible what this lady accomplished - building a network that saved over 2,000 children from certain death. The 3rd part of the book comes back to the Kansas teenagers - who travel to Poland multiple times to meet Irena - who lived until 2008.This book is an inspiration to all of us - what a single, or small number of people, can accomplish.
Jack Mayer created a compelling story that drew my attention immediately. His ability to both physically and emotionally describe his real life characters and their life and death situations aroused my emotions, sometimes bringing tears, sometimes a gasp out loud, sometimes a smile. The first part focuses on Kansas students developing a play for their Irena Sandler Project. Next the author takes us to Irena's World War 2 world in Poland and how her heart motivates her to organize a network to save 2500 Jewish children from the Warsaw ghetto at risk of the rescuers' own deaths. The last segment tells how the play is performed, received, including three visits to Irena in Poland. The girls in Mr. C's history class demonstrate how one person, with love and determination can build relationships and change the world. The story is still relevant and making a difference today. I highly recommend this book.
When I started reading I found where the first section was about the girls who started the Irena Sendler Project. I expected that to be boring since I wanted to get into the story. However, I found the story of the girls and their determination to be very interesting to follow. It was great to see how they brought to life someone who had been almost a footnote of history. The story of Irena was inspiring. Unlike some I did not find either story boring. It can touch your heart if you let it.
This book should be mandatory reading for every school age child in America! It is honest and compelling! I could not put it down, but I made myself after every chapter. I found it important to have time to absorb each chapter, to let sink in the magnitude of this story. No matter how many books I read about the holocaust, I am ever amazed at the strength of the human spirit. This is by far the best account I've ever read!
I could not put this book down. I bought it in the afternoon and began reading. After going to sleep I awoke at 3:30 and had to finish it. I always think truth is an amazing commodity. The truths spoken in this book remind me to be aware how easily we can change as a people for good or evil. I would like to think I would have show courage but wonder if I might not have been one to turn a blind eye. Old I have the courage of the mothers placing their children in the care of others. I think I could have. I worked for several years with birth mothers who placed for adoption. I saw the process of their love for their babies, how they wanted more for them than they could give them. It is the same. They too save the lives of their infants. They too love them enough to sacrifice their own feelings. That experience made this so real in my mind and emotions. We need heroes many remain unsung. This book sings loudly. May God bless Christian and Jewish goodness and May God bless Mothers
This was an extraordinary moving story of the Holocaust in Poland, it's tragedies, it's heroes, and a group of teenagers who got the story out about one very special person, who lived to tell them about it. These stories should continue to be told so that this generation and the future generations never forget history...in hopes of never repeating it.
The story is basically true. It revolves around three female high school students who do their project about the WW II prisoner of war camp Treblinka and how Irena Sendler saves so many Jewish children from death by taking them in and finding homes for them. The jar refers to where she records who the children actually are and buries the jar under a tree in her yard. The students get to visit Irene Sendler in Poland because the play they write and act in gets so much publicity and funding for them to go to Poland. There are pictures in the back of the book.
